The most important spiritual growth doesn’t happen when you’re meditating or on a yoga mat.

@Spirituitive

“The most important spiritual growth doesn’t happen when you’re meditating or on a yoga mat. It happens in the midst of conflict… when you’re frustrated, angry or scared and you’re doing the same old thing, and then you suddenly realize that you have a choice to do it differently…”

Just because we’ve acted a certain way or thought a certain way for a long time doesn’t mean we can’t change our thoughts and actions!

Just because anger or even violence has become a normalized go-to in our minds doesn’t mean it needs to stay that way!

Even the angriest people or those most prone to violent thoughts can choose to change!

Surprisingly, suppressing our thoughts isn’t effective!

So how does a person do it?

When we create thoughts, our brain creates Neural Pathways. Whether the thought is positive or negative, Neural Pathways form.

The more we repeat a thought or behavior, the deeper and wider the pathways entrench themselves in our brains.

When we choose positive thoughts or behaviors often enough, we develop new Neural Pathways, effectively rewiring our brains from anger and rage to become more and more peaceful!

It take patience and perseverance to do this.

Be patient with yourself through this process, as there will be ups and downs!

I’d love to say that once you make a decision to change that it works out each and every time, but I know from my own experience that there are many ups and downs, more in the beginning of the process, and gradually lessening.

I didn’t realize this was a natural part of the process, so I beat myself up and was very harsh with myself, which only made me tumble down into depression, which made picking myself back up again much harder.

I learned how important it is to be gentle with ourselves!

I learned how important it is to be kind to ourselves!

As we practice being gentle and kind with ourselves, we actually help to speed the process of helping our lives become more positive, instead of continuing to sabotage our efforts.

Which path do you wish to step onto?

  1. Yoga and meditation is a practice we cultivate on the mat, and in life – to stay present each moment to what is present and respond skillfully from that place. I did not expect to discover the importance of self compassion and kindness to self, in the process, as you rightly remind.
