Science has proven the incredible power of words. There is power in words. Sticks and stones may break bones, but words too can hurt or heal.
Some people believe that because they don’t physically hurt someone they cannot be an abuser if the “only” are verbally abusive. That is untrue.
Many of us don’t believe that words can have an effect on our physical bodies, but words spoken to us either by others or to ourselves can have significant effects on our bodies, not only our minds and spirits.
The words we say to ourselves are powerful. If we speak harshly and unkindly to ourselves, we bring in anxiety and depression into our minds and hearts, while speaking gently and kindly to ourselves is healing and helps inner peace and happiness to grow.
This video shows the incredible power of words on the formation of ice crystals, and since our bodies are mostly water, words have incredible power on us too! Imagine the effect on our health too!
Please watch the video. It impacted me deeply and shows how incredibly powerful we each are!

If speaking kindly to yourself sounds unnatural and weird, start small. Start slowly. It takes time to build new habits. Speak softly and gently, be supportive, give yourself kudos, give yourself grace.
Practicing speaking kindly to ourselves and to others is a skill that can end up not only building up our mental health, but our physical health too!
- It’s never too late to teach ourselves!
- Don’t speak negatively about yourself!!
- Stop hating yourself for everything you aren’t. Start loving yourself for everything you are.
- Creating Mindful Distance of Thoughts… what’s that?
- Change the tapes!
- Baby steps serve a purpose to allow us to keep moving forward!
- Baby steps start the whole change happening!
- There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.
- It is in the midst of change we often discover wings we never knew we had.
- You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem!
- You are worthy of a miracle because you yourself are one!
- Butterflies cannot see their wings, but the rest of the world can!
- Self-worth is so vital to your happiness. If you don’t feel good about you, it’s hard to feel good about anything else.
- If you absolutely can’t stay positive, don’t go negative, just cruise neutral for a while
- Don’t quit on you!
- No matter how hard the past is, you can always begin again.
- New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings…
- Change is never painful, only resistance to change is painful.
- Know that your deepest gifts grow in the garden of your wounds.
- Self-worth is so vital to your happiness
- Be so positive that the negative people don’t want to be around you!
- Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be!
- Do all that you can… the universe loves each of us and is working things out on our behalf!

I love your ending to the rhyme, “but words too can hurt or heal.” That’s so good, Tamara! What an incredible visual for the effect. Thank you for the reminder!

Words are so incredibly powerful, aren’t they? I’ve seen this video (or similar), but it’s been awhile so appreciate the reminder!

Yes, they’re far more powerful than we even knew. It’s comforting though, no matter what we have come out of, we each have the power to change ourselves and our lives.

Thank you for sharing that powerful video! I saw Dr. Emoto several years ago in Tucson. Fascinating research and incredible findings. Makes sense to me! 💧

Yes, it is fascinating isn’t it. Years ago I’d have been afraid of what it meant, as I had no idea how to speak nicely to myself. Thankfully it’s a learnable skill.

Amazing, Tamara! I was not familiar with the effect of words on water molecules. We’re already experiencing the power of negative words in dividing our nation.

So true, and there are so many negative words that are being normalized. Imagine if we could change how we each interact with one another, how drastically the world would change!

I’ve observed that this becomes possible when those in power lose control due to community/societal/state collapse.

An important post. I recently saw a video describing the speech a woman of color gave upon receiving an award. She began by saying thank you and that she earned the prize. Part of being kind to oneself is to take credit for what we have done, internally and in public. Thank you for this reminder, Tamara.

I love the example you give. Too often people downplay and denigrate the accomplishments of others in a need to feel superior to them. When we can lift others up, as well as ourselves, we all win. This isn’t about false praise or giving participation ribbons to everyone, but instead recognizing real merit.
We all deserve to be treated in a kind and respectful way. It doesn’t take away from any of us to do so, but only adds to our family and community well-being.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but a man had plants in three rooms. In one he spoke nothing but hatred, in the second only love, and in the third he did nothing. It was an amazing thing to see the withering and death of the hated words, blossoming, growth and health in the love, and a neither growth nor dying in the room of silence. We too do indeed respond accordingly in what we hold against ourselves or other. Words do indeed have great power. I couldn’t watch the crystal one on Facebook but I have seen a crystal one where similar incredible responses are made. Great share kind lady, may we find that beauty within ourselves and shared accordingly of what we become 🤗❤️🙏

Thanks for providing another wonderful example for us Mark. Seeing outside proof is quite powerful, for our bodies respond to words and thoughts the same way the water and the plants do. How many of our physical and mental ailments would improve if we spoke kindly to ourselves and to others?
