Even years later after healing, my body has reset to needing 9 to 12 hours of sleep at night and to be able to sit quietly reading instead of having music or the TV on for background noise. If I do watch TV, I need quiet time after to prepare to sleep.
I spent most of my life, from very early childhood long into adulthood living in the fight or flight mode. My amygdala was my primary living room in my head.
After working through my very gut-wrenching healing, I find my body is still needing to absorb a lot of rest and quiet.
This isn’t abnormal. Many of us need it, but with our “always on” culture, we get tricked into believing that something may be wrong with us if we honor those needs.
I gave myself permission to give my body what it needs and not to try to override it. If I don’t, then I start to get another shingles episode, and having lived with dozens and dozens of episodes over a ten-year period, I was happy to not be in chronic Shingles mode and I did everything to not go back.
My doctor had told me that instead of having a nervous breakdown all those years ago when I was in my early 20s, that my physical nervous system broke down, allowing the shingles to take a foothold.
If you’ve come out of a difficult healing cycle and you find your body needs a lot of rest and quiet, please give it what it needs.
This is still part of healing, it’s resetting the whole nervous system. There’s no determined amount of time for your body to be in this new cycle.
By stepping into this and allowing it to happen in an accepting and peaceful way, you’re continuing to heal all those frazzled synapses, cells, muscles, nerves, organs, and even your very marrow, for our past damage went deep.
There’s no shame in this reset. It’s what your body needs. Now is also a good time to practice being kind to yourself and to give yourself grace for all the things in your past that you didn’t know then, but you know own now.
Blessings to you!
The difference between taking baby steps and acting small, Tamara, is that one prepares you for success, the other for a fall.
Message I received from my daily “Notes from the Universe” at tut.com:
- Be gentle with yourself, you’re doing the best you can!
- Breathe, Darling. This is just a chapter. It’s not your whole story.
- Nobody talks about this part… these are called growing pains.
- Our inner head space… doing the inner shadow work
- When a flower doesn’t bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.
- Always remember just how rare you are!
- As you start to walk on the way, it appears.
- Attitude is everything, so pick a good one!
- Dear me, I’m discovering I like you!!
- Doing the work ourselves…
- Every new day is another chance to change your life
- Everyday is a second chance!
- Get some fresh air today!
- Give yourself some love!
- Laugh!! It’s really good for you!
- Not all storms come to disrupt your life, Some come to clear your path.
- Old energy is clearing. New energy is entering. Great things are coming.
- Once you know who you really are, being is enough.
- One small positive thought in the morning can change your whole day!

This is such wonderful wisdom about honoring what we need. I love your point that the entire nervous system is getting a reset. Yes, it takes time! Beautiful post, Tamara!

Thanks Wynne! Yes, giving ourselves permission to honor our needs seems to go against the very grain of our grind culture, which in itself is a completedenial of our needs. Hope your week goes well!

Just loud noises affect me these days. And baby cries are the worst. I think its their frequency 🤣❤️🙏

Wow, I can very much relate to this. I appreciate that idea that the body is “catching up” on the stillness and that there’s no shame in resting. I’ve reached the same conclusions.

May all who reset from trauma find a way to throw off the triggers, one by one, to the fullest life possible. Thanks, Tamara.
