“If you don’t want a data center in your town or neighborhood, stop using Ai” – this is easier said than done!

“If you don’t want a data center in your town or neighborhood, stop using AI!”

Have you heard anyone saying this? I know I have. The truth is, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is now embedded in so many everyday things we take for granted. It is used to “optimize” our user experiences and without AI things would look and feel quite different.

Got bills from service and utility providers? More and more websites are being optimized now to sort and analyze their data, provide the customers with an interface, and be able to forecast future needs. Play on game apps on your phone? Yup, your user experience is being optimized here too. Gaming is a highly competitive service, and developers are keen to keep their games looking cutting edge, so guess what, AI is used to provide that cook 3D seamless play. Use a search engine such as Google? Yup, AI is working behind the scenes to make suggestions for your search results. Companies are quietly working behind the scenes to pay premium prices to have their companies come up in the top results.

AI is becoming more and more integrated into our lives that we might not even realize it’s there. The question is no longer if we want a data center, but where are the best places to put them.

Is the ocean a good place for data centers?

Here’s an article in Scientific American that talks about how the Chinese are putting them in the ocean.

China is pulling ahead of the rest of the world in sinking data centers that power AI into the ocean as an alternate way to keep them cool

Scientific American By You Xiaoying edited by Andrea Thompson

Other news outlets have picked up on this story:
A submerged Chinese data center is packed with 2,000 servers
China Just Built the World’s First Underwater AI Data Center
World’s first wind-powered underwater datacentre starts operating in …
China Has An Underwater Data Center. The U.S. Will …

The future seems to definitely have AI and data centers in it. The questions we should be asking is where are the best places to put them? We may need to think more globally with regards to the environment and water issues, as well as nationally for security issues.

Like it or not, they’re going to be playing a big part in the future.

AI agents are still learning and evolving. We’re still very much in the early years. If they’re learning from what is being put out onto the web, maybe we need to think about reigning in the negative stuff?

What are your thoughts?
