Recovery is an inside job and can’t be outsourced for others to do the work for us.

Last wekk I asked a question, “Do you really want to be healed?” This week I’m sharing a truth about recovery.

Recovery is a personal choice and requires we do the work. Yes, we benefit from going to therapy, but therapists are guides trained to help us do our inner work.

I’ve met some people who were disillusioned with doctors and therapists, saying those professionals hadn’t made them all better, as though going to a professional eant they outsourced the work of healing.

There’s no outsourcing our healing, it’s an inner job and always a personal choice in how long we do it for and to what degree.

It’s hard work; it is gut wrenching because we must face some hard truths and develop new patterns of thinking to be able to live life in a healthier way.

This is where many people give up, because it’s hard to change. Hard, not impossible.

It may feel impossible, but that’s just all the old accumulation of patterns of behavior still interfering. It takes a lot of repeated efforts to change our behavior patterns and to change how we perceive ourselves and how we react to the world around us.

The transition time is hard to go through

Hard, not impossible.

If you set a resolution to change some things in your life because you’re seeing they aren’t working out well for you, please know that the transition time is hard and often feels the hardest and most impossible just before a break through.

Years ago, I faced suicide when I had reached a point feeling that I didn’t deserve to breathe the air or to walk the earth, and thankfully my plans and my life got an intervention.

I learned that a lot of what I was feeling had been projected onto me and I had internalized it so deeply that the mess felt like my own.

Setting boundaries and what it means

Setting internalized boundaries to no longer accept what others were happily throwing at me was an important first step, as was setting external boundaries to no longer allow toxic people in my life which was a difficult second step.

Teaching myself to like myself after I had been torn down and broken was a huge challenge, and as I’ve written many times before, it’s best approached in baby steps so that each step is a truthful and believable step.

It’s a long journey to healing and to become whole, but it’s doable and so worthwhile, for we discover inside of ourselves this lovely and loving person that was there all along!

Sending hugs!
