Some points to help you reduce anxiety
*Disclaimer: My posts are meant to encourage only, not to diagnose or to advise. Please, please adhere to the local guidelines for isolation and social distancing. No matter what, don’t take any chances with anyone’s health!
It’s very hard to think of being grateful for the storms when we’re in the middle of one, yet the Sages throughout the years teach us that when we choose to be in a state of gratitude we are able to see solutions quicker than if we’re angry or fearful.
Our immune systems become stronger when we’re feeling calmer and more at peace than when we’re stressed, which wreaks havoc on our minds and bodies.
Let me give you a few positive pieces of information which may help to dispel some of the fear and anxiety you may be feeling, to allow yourself to move into a more hopeful frame of mind:
- 80% of people get a very mild illness and they recover uneventfully, with few symptoms! see this article on WebMD
- Some experts put the mortality rate at 3.4% which means there’s a 96.6% recovery rate! see article on ABC news
- Have you heard of Herd Immunity?
Herd immunity (also called herd effect, community immunity, population immunity, or social immunity) is a form of indirect protection from infectious disease that occurs when a large percentage of a population has become immune to an infection, thereby providing a measure of protection for individuals who are not immune. Wikipedia - New treatment for Covid-19 being tested at WashU!
“ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) — Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine are testing an old treatment as a possible solution to helping victims of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Modeling their work off of a treatment for the Spanish Flu in 1918, doctors are exploring the idea of transfusion of antibodies from the blood of recovered patients into people who are currently ill.
The plan would require patients who recover from a COVID-19 infection to donate their blood, and then doctors would isolate the plasma and create a serum to transfuse into people currently battling the illness, a process that is dramatically faster than developing a new drug.” See article here
The reason why countries all over the world are taking the very strict actions is to slow the spread so we can a) have enough of the population recover so that b) we can develop more of a Herd Immunity. This helps protect the most vulnerable and people with other severe illnesses.
The danger isn’t to the 96.6% of us, but if most of us follow the social distancing protocols, we can in turn help the smaller percentage to have a better chance.
NOTE: No one has been able to accurately predict who will get a mild case or a more severe one, so please, please take all the precautions you are urged to! This post is meant to help ease anxiety, not to dispel the need of social distancing!
What do all these things mean?
Our minds go to the very worst possible scenarios, fed in by media hype and Hollywood movies showing a much grimmer outcome, so our fears get stoked by those flames.
When we can dial back the anxiety and stress, we can replace panic with calm, knowing that as a world community we’re coming together to help each other’s families, because each of us have vulnerable members in our families we want to protect!
Isolating and social distancing isn’t to protect the majority from dying, but is a worldwide act of love for the minority!
Isn’t is wonderful to be part of such a huge act of love? When do we ever get opportunities to come together to practice love for each other in such a huge way?
Yes, many people’s jobs, finances and businesses have taken a huge hit. I have faith that the huge love we are showing for each other is going to continue, and we’re going to help each other to rebuild where necessary.
The silver lining in this dark cloud is the huge outpouring of love we have been showing each other, we’ve REALLY been connecting with each other, with our families and neighbors.
The love that we’re allowing to be spread from person to person and country to country is HUGE. Let’s remember this, because love is POWERFUL!
We’re in this together to help protect the weak, and together we’re going to help each other rebuild our lives and to create the futures where we can flourish.
Let us be thankful, for we have each other!
