“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes then learn how to do it later.” – Richard Branson
I can’t tell you the number of times an employer asked me to do something new I hadn’t done before, and I had to teach myself how to do it before I could get started on the task, which I successfully completed.
When an employer knows us, knows our skill sets, our strengths and aptitudes, it’s somehow easier for us to accept a challenge they offer us.
Yet, when a stranger sees the same things within us, we get fearful that we might not measure up!
If we’ve managed to learn new skills in the past and have accomplished the goals set out for us, why would we doubt that we could do it once more?
Fear. Fear of the unknown.
A current employer who asks us to do something new, even when we don’t yet have the skills, inspires a feeling of confidence because they already know us. They trust our abilities to problem solve and to become able.
A stranger offering us an opportunity can illicit anxiety within us, because we wonder how they can see our potential to succeed when they don’t know us. Yet that person looks carefully at what we’ve already done, and can surmise that we have what it takes to get the job done.
It isn’t the stranger’s lack of perception which is in question, for they have our own history to pull from.
No, it is our own anxiety. Our own fear of failure which causes us to question ourselves, our abilities.
If we can see ourselves through the other person’s eyes, we can see they already see us as being capable of learning the needed skills, because we’ve done it before.
By taking a step back from our fears, from our anxieties, we can look more objectively at ourselves, and gain the self-confidence we need to move forward!

This was very good to read and be reminded of. I was recently surprised when someone described very easily why they thought I was good for a responsibility. I was surprised, I said yes and now figuring out on a day to day basis how to be the contribution. It does help me to remember that they trusted me and so I will do the same. Something good will emerge I think.

It is so true, when an employer ask, we find the courage. And even if someone i don’t know so well ask, I try. But it is when I ask myself to try new stuff that sometimes I get stuck, or it takes ages for me actually muster the courage to do. But I am a lot better now at it now.

I’m happy to hear that! Isn’t it funny how our perspective changes when we feel someone has confidence in us? Nothing has actually changed in our ability or the possibility to learn, it’s all in our perspective!

Very true. Also when we are working we don’t have a choice, we have to do it. 😉

That’s a good point! I’ve taught myself to do new things on my own time because I felt an inner urgency to do so. It’s possible that not everyone has this feeling but I believe we can work on it!

For sure we can work on ourself all the time and if we see it as fun and good for us, then we can over come whatever might hold us back
