“Fill your own cup first, you’re no good to anyone with an empty cup! If you do everything for others they’ll never learn to help.”
Does this sound selfish, or does it sound wise to you?
If you’re a people-pleaser it might sound a little selfish because you’ve become accustomed to giving everything of yourself, even until you get sick or lose yourself.
When we take a step back from our behavior we can see the wisdom in these words, for only by taking care of ourselves, can we be of help to others.
Often we define ourselves by how much we do for others, as though by having a massive checklist of things we do makes us better people. This is how we feel good about ourselves, yet if we’re doing for others what they need to be doing themselves, we’re constantly eroding their ability to be mature adults.
Sounds harsh? It’s important to look carefully at what we’re doing and check to see if in all the busy-ness we’re actually NOT helping! Does this make sense?
It’s important to take care of ourselves physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually! If you’re missing out on any of these 4 areas, please take a close look at your punch-list and determine WHY you’re doing it!
Is it really beneficial to run yourself ragged in the name of helping?
Time to fill your cup and practice some self-care!
