Luck is What Happens When Opportunity Meets Preparedness!

Taken from an old post from March 11, 2018. I decided to post this one again (but also add to it a little) since we are at the start of a new year, and for many, a new cycle.

“Luck is what happens when Opportunity meets Preparedness!” This is so true! Sometimes we don’t even know what to prepare for, yet if we’re OPEN then we tend to see more opportunities. The act of deciding to become open to new things is actually a really nice way of preparing ourselves for the next part of our lives.

Opportunities are all around us, every moment, every day, yet when our spirits have become ground down we plod along just trying to survive. When we’re exhausted from trying to survive it can seem too overwhelming to look at ANYTHING as an opportunity, so we filter OUT many, many things.

Yet, part of this exhaustion is our own inner voice telling us that this is our lot in life and we just need to accept it.

In accepting a life which doesn’t fit in with who our soul yearns to be, we lose hope of anything changing for the better because we’re always on the alert to guard against things changing for the worse.

This exhaustion is far more than physical, it’s emotional and spiritual too. For many of us, it has become or became a major factor in how we navigate or navigated our lives.

When I realized that the universe had my back all along, and that it has each of our backs, I was able to allow myself to be more open. I was able to release the worries that I had held onto to guard against the next calamity, or that the good thing would fizzle out, because, well, that’s what happens.

When I started to become open, I started to see more opportunities. When I realized the universe has my back and subtly guides me to where I need to be, even when I self-sabotage or someone else throws in a major wrench, it helped be become more trusting that things would indeed work out.

At first my inner negative conditioning got in my way and convinced me that those opportunities just weren’t for ME! That I wasn’t one of the lucky ones to make it work, so I shut down again and closed myself off to some opportunities.

However, I was determined to change my life and change my circumstances.

I set my mind to becoming open, to saying yes to good things and to following through on opportunities which came my way!

This determination to become open changed my life! More than just physical circumstances changed, my new approach allowed my mental health to improve, helped my depression and anxiety to lift, and helped me become optimistic about myself and my future.

Opportunities are all around us, and the first step is opening our minds to the possibilities, to really seeing and really hearing what’s going on around us!

The next step is saying yes to good things which come your way, to trying new things!

Stepping outside of our immediate comfort zone can be handled incrementally and doesn’t have to mean radical sweeping changes but can be as simple as attending an evening or afternoon workshop about something which intrigues us!

I now love, love the things I’ve seen and learned as a result of having decided to be open!

I started simple: to be open to life, to learning about what IS!

This thought transformed my life by leading me to learn about entire worlds of things I’d never have wanted to come into contact before in my fearful and closed mindset!

It’s amazing what’s out there if we choose to see!

  1. This is an important post! I have noticed this in my life as well! I made a conscious choice at first to step outside of my comfort zone (I recognized it just wasn’t working for me anymore). I knew I needed change, but of course I feared it.

I’m far along that path now. Many blessings I never would have foreseen did arise.

I’m finding I still have to choose over and over to stay on that growth path, even though I now have faith, fears and doubts still creep up.

    1. Yes, making those choices too! We can hit a snag in life and it gets us questioning so much! I keep reminding myself of my successes so I can keep my momentum up and my courage to keep going forward!

  2. I found myself saying, “yes” throughout your essay. Saying yes to things over the last few years, has positively changed my life, myself, and like you wrote, the changes can be incremental. 🌟 🙏🏻

    1. You’re so right Michele! I found that I worked best doing things incrementally, otherwise my ptsd would want to rear itself. Even a crushed seed can still grow! Blessings to you for the new year!

  3. I love this “When we’re exhausted from trying to survive it can seem too overwhelming to look at ANYTHING as an opportunity, so we filter OUT many, many things.” Yes! And your guidance to be open and then say “yes” is so good. Thanks, Tamara!

  4. This post is timely as towards the end of 2023 I’ve had a new opportunity gifted to me.

It’s something I’ve thought about trying for a while, but was never quite sure where to start.

After doing it for a few months I’ve started having doubts, thinking of everything that could go wrong by continuing to pursue this new challenge.

Reading your post makes me think am I self sabotaging myself and filtering out an opportunity to favour what I’m already familiar with!

    1. Ah yes, self sabotage! I know that one! Even Richard Branson says if a great opportunity falls in your lap, say yes, and then learn the skills if you don’t have them! Keep going James! If you’re already doing it, enjoy it, then keep going!
