Fear… What Can Hold Us Back?

Your Fear Is 100% Dependent On YOU For Its Survival
“Your fear is 100% dependent on YOU for its survival.” – Dr. Steve Maraboli. One of the quotes which is included in the book “On Becoming a Lemonade Maker” by Tamara Kulish. Each of these letters are carved into the Aspen trees high up in the mountains over Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Our fears can take many forms. This article talks about what can hold us back from pursuing our dreams and going all the way with them!

I came across an interesting question, “Authors, What is your biggest fear around or aversion to the act/process/idea of selling?” which is really a different spin on the age old question related to our fears of success or even embarking upon our dreams. Remove the word “Author” and substitute it for a title personal to you, and I’m sure you’ll start to see your own little list popping up in your mind!

MY biggest fears? 1) Rejection! I fear rejection on a HUGE, immense scale!

Do I let it stop me from moving forward? No. I may not move at warp speed as some authors are doing, but instead I learn about what I need to do, and add it into my daily actions.

I try my best to do it in a way that I’m being my most authentic, sincere self… since
2) I fear being called out on being insincere… something I don’t like seeing in other people either. I know this is an irrational fear, but it’s something that has dogged me since I was young.

Would I like to sell a lot of books? Well, yes!

I also fear 3) becoming a huge success, since there is a danger that my own life will be under a microscope, with people looking for flaws… simply for what I’ve written about.

How do I deal with that fear? By trying to live my life in the most real and authentic way I know how to do, and blogging about the issues I deal with. I think if I continue to grow a readership, and people come to trust me, I can in turn seek comfort that I have people behind me if those nay-sayers come around, (and hopefully they will be few and far between!)

So these are my biggest fears I face as an author, but really, our fears are tied to our inner souls, not just to the work we do, that’s why they’re so difficult to deal with.

I think by laying our fears down onto the table openly, they lose some of their power… much like the bogey-man or the monster under the bed when we turn on a light, the creatures of the night flee away.

Perhaps another fear many of us harbor in secret: we fear being ridiculed for our fears!

That somehow, if people knew our fears, they would find us to be less that what they thought of us!

“You don’t go through a deep personal transformation without some kind of dark night of the soul.” – Sam Keen. One of the quotes which is included in the book "On Becoming a Lemonade Maker" by Tamara Kulish. The new moon was hanging in the sky seemingly beside a tall palm tree in Tucson Arizona one evening at sundown.

Even the strongest, most powerful people have or have had their fears. How we deal with them is key to not being held back by them!

Go ahead… lay them on the table! Now, look at them carefully… see how you can make a few changes to move forward. Even small changes can have a big impact!

The trick is I think to get the motion started of moving forward. Even slow movement is still movement!

The nice thing is, as we get started dealing with the things that we fear most, we gain confidence, so when more opportunities come up, we feel more capable of doing those!

Let me know what you’ve gotten started with that you were fearful of before?
