Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.

“Do not let the behavior of others destroy your inner peace.” – Dalai Lama

There is so much anger and fear being purposely stirred up these days by many groups, organizations, and individuals, all in the name of free speech and educating people about what’s really going on.

Families are being fractured by one or more members becoming addicted to the fear and anger from the negativity of the videos and articles they voraciously consume.

Watch one video and the algorithms helpfully suggest more, and more of the same fear and anger inducing genre.

Anger and fear produce an endorphin rush, and you need to keep watching and reading more to keep the endorphins up. That’s the essence of addiction.

This is just as addicting as any of the opiates fracturing our families and communities.

There are many people profiting financially from creating these videos and websites, just as big Pharma and their drug reps have profited from selling opiates.

Bottom line: our families and communities are reeling under the effects of people’s mental health having been tampered with.

When we have our anger and fears constantly triggered, our Amygdala kicks in creating that endorphin rush; the Amygdala hijacks the brain away from our calm and rational area into a manic state full of paranoia.

How did it start?

This pandemic has created deep levels of fear within people, we’ve had to live with the fear of getting sick and dying for more than a year.

In order to cope with this long term fear, it’s normal to wish to try to exert some modicum of control over what’s happening.

Trying to find someone to blame, not only for the pandemic, but for all the other problems we experience in society, is part of this need to exert control, for when we think we have a group of people to blame, we feel we can gain control by punishing them.

So the anger directed at groups of people is an effort to try to gain control of a world which seems more and more out of control.

Except that this isn’t working.

People who are angry and venting it out aren’t feeling any better, they aren’t regaining any control in their lives.

Venting anger only makes us feel more and more out of control, which in turn amplifies the fear and the anger.

No one venting their anger is solving any of the problems they are fearful of. Families and communities are being hurt by this anger.

How do we reduce our fears and levels of anger? How do we stop this addiction?

Step 1 is to purposefully stop being around people who trigger us, and to purposefully stop watching the videos and to stop reading the articles which set off the anger and the fear.

Stop feeding ourselves the things which act just like opiates, affecting our mental health!

Step 2: Accept that the only person we hope to have control over is ourselves, so work on releasing the inner need to control.

Step 3: Start taking care of ourselves by going out for walks, eating nourishing food, and getting plenty of rest!

Step 4: Start introducing positivity into our lives by carefully choosing what we watch, read, and listen to.

This is a vitally important step, for when we remove the negativity, we can’t just leave a void!

Our mental health is our responsibility, just as our physical health is!

If we feed our bodies crap and garbage, our bodies break down.

Likewise when we feed our minds and spirits crap full of anger and fear, our minds break down.

We can’t save everyone else out there, we can only work on our own mental health!

This has been a long and difficult year for all of us. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel now as more and more people become vaccinated that even those who don’t agree with vaccinations can hope for herd immunity.

We’re going to come out of this!

Start thinking about working on your own fears and anger issues, to teach yourself to develop your inner peace and even your happiness!

  1. Totally agree with you. Important to stay off the TV, social media, news etc. I am trying to consume less and less of it as it often makes me angry and is not worth my time. Exploring instead how to become the person we ought to be and find our inner peace is so worthwhile. Thank you!

  2. I loved reading this article from you. I have been amused for long about how negative emotions can become an addiction. There seems to be comfort only in feeling them as any other way of being feels strange. During my work with private students I have discovered how calm and clear feels very much boring LOL. People need to be trained to be ok with that, realize that, that is actually a natural way of being well and they can actually reach joy from here.

    1. Yes! Please continue to share that vital message with people! Trying to reach a more balanced and peaceful society will feel like a denouement after the raging highs. A peaceful joy is far better for us collectively, for all our ment and physical health!

        1. It starts with each of us. Even if our ripples are small, we can still connect with other peoples ripples. I used to be fascinated watching the beginning of a rai shower onto a puddle or lake. The very first drops were so isolated that the ripples didn’t even touch. Then more and more drops fell, creating ripples which came closer and closer until they were interconnected.

Right now our ripples are small but with more people we can become the quenching rain which puts out the fires of anger and hatred.
