So I did a thing.
This past Monday I emailed a publisher’s agent with a query for a draft manuscript. Their website says it typically takes 4 to 6 weeks to hear a response back, so I won’t know how they feel about it for a while. I’ve been sitting on this manuscript for a few years, having brought it to a point that I need more help with it. It’s a memoir full of magical realism with a dash of paranormal from the years my second husband and I had a film production company and we struggled to make a feature film. This agent seems to be interested in exactly the right mix of things that this book needs.
Here are a couple excerpts of the query:
The book is based on a life adventure to make a feature film which ended up with two of the men involved having lost their minds to madness, possibly a result of the spirit attached to the whole project warning them repeatedly not to go after dark money and morally bankrupt people to finance it. Paranormal and odd series of events occurred during the pre-production time and the people who became addicted and obsessed with making that film tragically doomed two marriages, the author’s and that of her business partners. Life events seemed to start normally enough, but the eerie parallels between the events of the original book the screenplay was based on and what happened in real life were soon becoming apparent in their daily lives. I was asked to write a “making of the movie” book which began with a pre-production journal to document what the film production company was doing, little knowing at that time what forces would soon be unleashed into our lives. The journal became the basis for this book when it became apparent that there was more at play than simply making a movie. The Native American spirit, which was in the original book started to make itself known to all four business partners and later even extended in similar ways to other people who were involved with the project. Just like the main character of the original book, both men in the production company later lost their minds because they were trying to force events to follow their own vision instead of respecting what they had been told they needed to do. Adding to the intensity, the struggle to keep finding and losing investment partners, ended up bankrupting not only their finances but the morals of some of the players. The story ends when my husband died in a lock-down facility for Dementia patients; he was finally happy and free of his inner demons, living out his final days convinced he was on a movie set making his film and all the doctors and nurses were actors and crew.
This draft manuscript was emotionally very difficult to write; I was so emotionally and financially decimated from those years and the breakdown of my marriage that I had to focus a lot of time on my own healing and writing about it – out of which came 2 books (How to Heal Your Life on a Deep Heart Level and Developing Happiness When You Can’t Find It) as well as my blog Tamara Kulish – Helping you move through life!. I’ve been an artist for most of my life, so when my husband asked me to write the making of the movie book because he considered me to be a better writer than himself, I had to rethink who I considered myself to be. Writing comes from the depths of my heart and the marrow of my bones. It has become part of my mission in life to bring the lessons I learned to others in a gentle and supportive manner that becomes easy to slowly assimilate. I struggled with the direction this story needed to take; it could easily have been turned into a dramatic thriller, but the deeper lessons of love, addiction, and following one’s dreams at all costs seemed to resonate more with me and the message I now choose to share with people.
I learned something.
After my daughter read the query out loud to the kids, they told me I was all over TikTok, or rather my name is with people making videos about quotes they found from memes on my blog and they attributed those quotes to me. I’m flattered to be the subject of their videos but concerned that they’re attributing quotes to me that I didn’t author. As you have seen from my posts, I will often share a quote I find and then add my own thoughts to it, giving some practical advice on how to apply it. The kids encouraged me to create an author site on TikTok and start creating videos of my own where I can share my posts and my thoughts. My grandson (19) also suggested talking about my artwork and the pottery I do. It’s all a little overwhelming to consider embarking on a new thing, but apparently the TikTok app makes it easy to do. I’ll probably need their help!
Disclaimer for TikTok:
It has come to my attention that there are content creators creating content about quotes they’re attributing to me, Tamara Kulish. As far as I have seen, the quotes are from memes I’ve shared on my blog here. I attribute those memes to the author of the quote and the meme creator when I find the information about them, but if I don’t know, I write author unknown. I did have a couple of people contact me about a couple of those memes asking for permission to use them, but I was also clear that the author was unknown to me.
Please feel free to look at those blog posts the quotes live on and see how I add my own thoughts and advice for incorporating the lesson of the quote into your life.
