We are seldom happy with what we have, but would go to pieces if we lost any part of it

“We are seldom happy with what we have, but would go to pieces if we lost any part of it” – Mignon McLaughlin

Years ago, in order to get prosperity, when our society had embarked on a search for more money, better tech, success, and recognition, we have forgotten how to be grateful for what we have, because that continuous quest has taught us that there’s something wrong with what we have.

All the marketing departments for every company are honed to put out messages that we NEED to have more of their products, and the latest iterations of them. This has worked against us, because we’ve been trained to keep seeking the newest and the best.

It has fueled our consumerism, given way to a throw away society where we drop what we have even if it’s pretty amazing, to grab the newest prize put out on the market.

In this quest for success and more stuff, we have a society which is hurting more than it ever did before. Mental health issues are more widespread as are addictions and violence.

When we practice mindful gratefulness, we reduce our anxiety levels and increase our serotonin levels in healthy ways and not just a fleeting high from retail therapy.

Deciding to be thankful for what we have, and to cherish people above things is a step towards inner peace and lasting happiness.

Gratitude isn’t just a platitude, it’s real. Happiness can be developed, there are steps to it, and gratitude is an essential step!
