You’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.

“You’ve been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.” – Louise Hay

When something just isn’t working, sometimes we need to try something unexpected and new!

Approving of ourselves, liking ourselves, giving grace to ourselves, forgiving ourselves, accepting ourselves… all new and foreign if we’re used to beating ourselves up, judging ourselves, comparing ourselves, etc.

Try this new approach and see for yourself how you feel! You may need to start in small doses at first, because if you’re like me, I felt very uncomfortable saying nice things or believing nice things about myself when I started!

Why do we criticize ourselves?

When we come from a past of being criticized or even abused, we internalize the negativity and the lies which are directed at us, then we perpetuate it inside of ourselves.

The abusive behavior is a reflection of the abuser’s inner world, their inner damage, anger and pain which they project onto others. Healthy people don’t hut others.

The negativity doesn’t feel good, and though we may feel it’s not true, we’ve been so conditioned into thinking we’re unworthy, lacking, less than, and many other hurtful, even cruel tags. As a result of this negative conditioning, we’ve come to accept it as our inner truth!

How do we change?

Just like we were negatively conditioned by repeated negative messaging, both overtly said and covertly through how we were treated, we can also change this programming by conditioning our minds and spirits to positive messaging!

This is hard work, because the damage has gone deep, but this is something we each need to do for ourselves.

Unfortunately, no amount of people telling us positive messages works, because our minds have built up walls to resist and to hold fast to the negative. That’s why people who have achieved success or fame don’t always feel good about themselves, because it’s up to each of us to do this inner work for ourselves!

The good news is that we each have the power to do it! Simply by starting to do it we take back our power which had been removed from our spirits, and we replenish our inner resources.

Start speaking kindly to yourself! Start reminding yourself you are worthy of having a wonderful life and of developing happiness for yourself! Check out Louise Hay’s page for more positive affirmations!

Forgive yourself for your mistakes, and just turn a new page and start fresh!

Remember each day is a new opportunity to create the life you wish to live for yourself!
