What CAN we do to change the world?

Our planet is flaming up and experiencing more and more extreme weather. We all know this by now!

Yet, the average person feels helpless to make any meaningful changes when governments have dragged their feet to build infrastructures for alternate power sources from petroleum products, and everything we buy is covered in 2-4 layers of plastic!

Truly, we need all of our governments to build infrastructures that help and encourage us to take steps towards environmentally friendly actions in our daily lives. For example, even if all vehicles currently on the road were to all be replaced with electric ones, the grid to produce electricity is already maxed out on the coldest and the hottest days of the year, so where will the electric energy come from to recharge the batteries?

Also, there are finite amounts of Lithium in the world, so mass producing more and more Lithium batteries isn’t something which is sustainable! (There is the technology to produce a hemp-based battery, and with the ability to grow 2 crops per year, hemp is sustainable and multi-purpose.)

Another major barrier to becoming environmentally friendly is the enormous worldwide conglomerates that utilize so much of our resources and which create toxins in our ecosystems through the manufacture of petroleum-based packaging.

There currently are good alternatives to petroleum plastics, these are plant-based plastics that are biodegradable!

Here’s some info for that:

In order for the top corporations to make changes we the consumers need to connect with them to let them know what we want them to do, what it means for the world, and how they can become world leaders instead of world polluters!

Here’s the top conglomerates if you wish to go to their social media pages, or to contact their marketing/media departments: information taken from Companies That Own the World’s Most Popular Brands. I have included my own letter at the bottom of this post if you wish an example to work from.

click for: Unilever

Some of its major brands include Dove, Axe, Lipton, Ben & Jerry’s, Vaseline, Knorr, Bertolli, Wall’s Ice Cream, Hellmann’s, Pond’s, Tresemme, St. Ives, and Slimfast.

click for: PepsiCo

The company’s top snacks include Doritos, Cheetos, Tostitos, Fritos, Lay’s, Ruffles, Stacy’s, Sabra, and Muller. Pepsi has also expanded its beverage lineup, which includes Mountain Dew, Gatorade, Tropicana, 7up, Lipton (through a joint venture with Unilever), Naked Juice, Aquafina, and select bottled Starbucks products.

click for: Coca-Cola Co.

The Coca-Cola Company (KO ) is also known for its iconic lineup of soda – Coca-Cola and Diet Coke. Over the years, the company has expanded into other beverage lines, featuring brands like Sprite, Fanta, Dasani, Fresca, TaB, Powerade, and VitaminWater.

Coca-Cola also offers a line of healthier drink options including Simply Orange, Minute Maid, Odwalla, Fuze, Honest Tea and Zico.

click for: Procter & Gamble

P&G is best known for its lineup of household cleaning products, including Charmin, Bounce, Tide, Febreze, Cascade, Downy, Mr. Clean, and Bounty.

The company also sells some well-known beauty and healthcare products including Pantene haircare, Olay, CoverGirl, Old Spice, Gillette, Crest, and Oral-B.

click for: Kraft

For its beverage lineup, Kraft brands include Maxwell House, MiO, Crystal Light, Tassimo, CapriSun, Kool-Aid, Gevalia, and Country Time.

Kraft also owns the brands A.1., Athenos, Breakstones, Cheez Whiz, Claussen, Cracker Barrel, Jell-o, Lunchables, Miracle Whip, Oscar Mayer, Philadelphia, Planters, Polly O, and Velveeta.

Update: I did contact Kraft and got a form letter back which didn’t have anything to do with the letter I sent them. They were speaking as though I wished to do business with them. Sorry, I didn’t feel anyone even bothered to read or care about the issues!!

click for: The J.M. Smucker Company

The company’s coffee brands include the iconic Folgers, Cafe Bustelo, Dunkin’ Donuts’ retail packaged coffee, kava, Medaglia Doro, Milstone, and Pilon. The company also owns the popular brands Jif, Pilsbury, Eagle Brand, Crisco, Hungry Jack, Magnolia, Martha White, and truRoots.

Update: I did receive a letter back which directly addressed the issues I brought up. I feel encouraged that this company is making efforts for the environment but of course, we need the big conglomerates to do MORE!!

We can all make a difference, together!

As a consumer of many of your products, I would DEARLY love to see your companies embracing plant-based plastics for packaging which will biodegrade without producing harmful chemicals or particles.

The production of petroleum-based plastics utilizes so much of our resources and creates toxins in our ecosystems through the manufacture and degradation process.
