When we hear the word ‘solitude’ we can typically think of getting away from it all, leaving the noise and the hustle-bustle to drive for miles to get into the middle of nowhere. Yet, there’s no need to rent a cabin in the woods to get away from it all, although that is a lovely thing to do if you have the money and time!
When I feel stressed, I love going for a walk. When I need to think, I love going for a walk. When I need to make a decision, I love going for a walk. When I feel great, I love going for a walk.
There’s a pattern!
I find going for a walk is the best way to find those moments of solitude which are so good for the soul, and of course the best benefit of walking is having a healthy body to carry us through those choices we make!
There are parks and places to walk available in most neighborhoods, if not fairly close by, so we all have opportunities to get moving! City parks and state parks usually offer both black-top and gravel pathways for strolling while thinking.
I’ve also taken long walks in urban areas, where I keep my eyes open to discover new things. I’ve taken some really cool photos on those walks!
With walking, it’s possible to experience solitude in a deeply meaningful ways, no matter what our budget, after all, it’s free to do!
I’m not someone who puts on headphones or earbuds when I walk as I love hearing the ambient sounds around me. I feel it becomes part of my walking-meditation and just allows my mind to float and free-associate to provide me new solutions and perspectives.
Bring along your refillable bottle to keep yourself hydrated! I’m not a fan of just water, so I bring lemonade, which gives me the electrolytes I need. I also keep a small bag of nuts in my backpack so I never need to worry about a blood-sugar crash! Other healthy snacks, even a small sandwich ensure keeping the blood sugar at good levels, and really, I just love taking a break (or two!) to sit down on a bench, eat my food and enjoy watching what’s going on around me.
Getting out for regular meditative walks is a wonderful way to feed the spirit, receive answers and just feel more relaxed!
