I value the expensive things in life!

by Jasmine L @CrystalLoversTribe

We don’t typically consider these things to be expensive, in a credit card world driven by materialism, but these things do come at a personal cost, and the people who give these things to their friends, loved ones and to the world are precious.

“I like people who give me expensive things like… time, loyalty, honesty, respect, support, motivation, and realness.”

We’ve just come out of the biggest gift giving season, and too many people get into financial debt trying to provide expensive ans flashy gifts. My jaw drops when the younger generation tells me the dollar amounts they spend on gifts. It seems like it’s expected, so natural, yet they seem driven by social media’s fake expectations.

It isn’t just the young generation, people have been doling out big amounts for gifts for many years to the point that it’s hurting some people financially who buy on credit or take out payday loans.

I feel so old-fashioned that I haven’t been swept along with this frenzy of shopping. Years ago, people would send out Holiday cards to show their friends and not so close family members that they’re thinking of them and wishing them well. These days I’m astounded by the long lists of people that even teenagers are expected to shop for. Maybe a White Elephant type of gifting would be better, it doesn’t put so much financial strain on everyone and is a lot of fun to play! (Something to think about for next year now that the credit card bills are rolling in!)

Let’s think about rethinking our relationship to buying things as a show of self-worth.

I’ve reached a point where more than ever I value people’s time, loyalty, honesty, respect, support, motivation, and realness. A homemade gift speaks deeply to my heart. Of course, a gift certificate for a massage is always a welcome gift too, lol!

Hope you have a wonderful week!

    1. You’re so right! The pressure is too much at times, yet, we fear pushing back on the expectations. If we were just to do it, and forget about the pushback, our lives would be simpler!

  1. The first thing I do on Christmas Day is to wish my mom a Merry Christmas, and for a gift ask her which restaurant she would like to go to this year. I give her my time, as you said, a nice meal in sharing it, and a glass of wine to celebrate it all. At 95 (in three weeks anyway), I can see she loves those gifts but it means so much more to her in that time sharing with family and friends 🤗🥰❤️🙏

    1. Thanks Michele, it has indeed been wonderful. I love massages, I think I’ll request those in the future, I have no need for any more things! I love experiences instead of stuff!

  2. You are on the right track, Tamara. I give only gifts that have a personal meaning, dependent on giving thought to who the individual is and what will matter to them. I also donate money to charities my children support in lieu of gifts. The well-to-do don’t need my help. My grandkids, however, do get books and toys.

    1. I’ve valued the handmade gifts the kids have made for me over the years, but now that they’re working part-time in high school, they want to spend their money. I think I need to encourage them to spend on experiences instead of things, I appreciate those much more! Hope your week is lovely!

        1. Going out to eat together is great, plus they could get you a certificate for a massage!
Are you affected by the fires where you live?

            1. I’m happy to hear you have escaped the worst of it. I’d imagine the smoke on the prevailing winds is difficult to deal with too. Praying for all.
