This post is a little different from my usual ones, but definitely inspired by the most recent Earth Day.
So the Billionaires are interested in space travel, and a couple have professed interests in colonizing Mars.
Really? Profit oriented people wanting to make a name for themselves? Or is there really a profit driven reason propelling them?
I have to admit, when I first heard about it, I found it exciting and intriguing, until I looked a little deeper at wht the possible rewards would be for them.
I may seem cynical to some, but when we look at why big-wig people do or not do things, it ALWAYS comes down to money!
Why stop using fossil fuels when billions of dollars are being transacted daily around the globe?
Why would they be interested in stopping the catastrophes of climate change, unless it directly impacted their ability to continue doing business?
Is space exploration about gaining glory for themselves, or is it in fact a race to gaining control of minerals that are rare on Earth but may be plentiful on Mars?
He who gets there first gets to claim the territory for themselves and set up mining operations.
Colonizing Mars? Do you think they will build beautiful cities, or terrible mining towns?
Since it is all profit driven, I’d wager they’re going to be terrible mining towns, where they will sell the concept of living an adventurous life in order to get people to labor in the colonies.
Only the top-dogs will be given larger accommodations, which will use up the precious resources of increased oxygen levels, while the workers will be housed like sardines.
Yes, there may be a lure of making big bucks for each year they sign up, but the toll on physical health is yet undetermined, but if past industrialization without laws or restrictions holds true, then life will be hell, and it will be off-planet (from Earth) so good luck in enforcing and Earth laws!
A couple of Billionaires are lamenting the lowering childbirth rates. Never mind that we have too many people on our planet, creating more and more pollution and damaging our resources and ecosystems. It’s all about a reduced workforce in the future.
Those future colonies, ahem, mining towns on Mars are going to need expendable amounts of people. The push for 24-hour, 365 day mining will push people past physical limitations, but who cares, as long as the need for rare minerals is met to satisfy the growing demand for a new cell phone each year, a new e-car and battery storage units for each house.
The consumer public has already bought into the yearly race to upgrade their goods. We’ve gone past the days of seeing those items as luxury items or status symbols, they’ve become the new normal, necessities! We’ve become trained into becoming automatic buyers, and when we don’t, people look at us like we have 3 heads or something!!
Space tourism will become a huge money-maker, with people paying millions for the pleasure of visiting Mars, or to cruise space.
Imagine what all those rockets blasting off daily or weekly will do to our atmosphere on Earth? Those puppies aren’t going to be solar-powered! They’re going to burn tons of rocket fuel and create emissions we can’t even imagine now!
If we think it’s a losing battle to stuff the Genie back in the bottle and want people to live simpler lives, we haven’t seen anything yet!
Do I sound cynical? Well, yes, I probably am. This isn’t about doing what is good for our planet, (or any other planet), as long as their bank accounts keep growing!
In the meanwhile, I choose to focus on what I can change, and to develop relationships that are healthy, for when we struggle with our self worth we end up seeking validation in outside things to make ourselves feel better, such as building a huge bank account and buying a lot of stuff.
When we do the inner work on ourselves and build genuine self-worth, we grow past a need to flash stuff to appear better!
Don’t forget, when all the advertising companies first started marketing goods to people as a way to feel better about themselves and their lives, mental health issues weren’t talked about, and people were still being locked up in “the loony bin” and given lobotomies and electric shock therapy when the needed antidepressants and talk therapy.
There were generations of very hurt and damaged people who couldn’t open up and honestly say what they were feeling, so when the ad men went to work selling goods, people bought into it, hoping to feel better about themselves and their lives!
Now we have more options. We can choose therapies that work for us and reject the consumerism. This is pretty radical, isn’t it?!

It is a fascinating subject that I don’t spend too much time thinking about, although I probably would say yes if given a chance to fly to the moon. 😁 You’ve introduced some points I had not considered. It all seems like sci-fi, however, I am sure it will happen someday, hopefully not because humanity has destroyed its earth home.

I think commercial space travel and space tourism will happen sooner than we think, as will the race to set up mining colonies on Mars to harvest minerals needed here for our consumerism. It’s going to happen at a fast pace and soon become the new normal, the way smart phones became a “necessity” within 2 years of usage!

I love how you began with the realities of the Big world out there and the symptoms of ‘Development’ – and then narrowed it down to our personal responsibilty of healing our inner journeys, developing healthy relations in our world. That is how we can make a difference in real ways surely.

Thanks so much! I think we can get overwhelmed when we see too much of the big picture, because it can get us feeling powerless and futile, but when we remind ourselves of the power we DO have, that helps to remove the anxiety. I’m a continuous big-picture thinker, but I learned to guard my sanity and keep my motivation high, I needed to focus on what I actually COULD do. As you know by now, I keep trying to remind people of this, for it is such a powerful thing to grasp in our lives!

You are very welcome, Yes I agree with you. Also often there is a lot of talk about the big picture without actually remedying anything at the personal level. So the reminders you bring to the world are important and much appreciated.

Thanks! I many times feel we’re powerless to effect any changes on governments or the big corporations, yet if we could each make changes within ourselves regarding how we see ourselves and our place in this world, we can actually end up doing far more that we could imagine!

Very good post Tamara. I believe that you are right about the greed. Us humans can’t even keep this planet healthy and strong let alone opening up life on a new planet. The higher class people are always trying to find a way to make an unfair buck and it’s not fair to the rest of us.

Right?! We are their vehicles to their wealth, that’s why they’re lamenting the lowering birthrates around the world.

After 200 years mars will be next earth
Doomed 💥

LOL! I think mars will become a bunch of mining colonies owned by various nations and guarded with military. Earth’s atmosphere will suffer with all the rockets taking off and landing.

True!!
Us, china and Russia will have a war for mars.

I can’t help but wonder if they consider how many fossil fuels are used up for all aspects of their space travel.

Exactly! I think they know exactly how much jet fuels will be used and the future effects on the atmosphere, but hey, profits rule the game!

The US has been focused on their Space Force program in recent years and, based on my layman’s research, I think the billionaire “Space Race” is to secure a lucrative federally-sponsored contract to set up military operations in space. Whatever the reason, you’ve absolutely right that the hypocritically big wigs will be burning tons of rocket fuel while insisting us little people trade beef for crickets.
Tamara, like you, I try to focus on those things within my control. I recycle, compost, and don’t buy things unless they are necessary. I like your point that “When we do the inner work on ourselves and build genuine self-worth, we grow past a need to flash stuff to appear better!” This is such important bit of wisdom that, unfortunately, few seem to have figured out.

I absolutely agree! This is such a multi-layered issue, of course governments are vying for military control, but that also means very lucrative contracts, and the need for more raw materials. There is so much going on at some international government levels that are just burning through our resources and creating huge carbon emissions. That’s not being talked about too much, for fear of angering those entities. I’m writing a new post that builds on the idea of the inner work.

Yes indeed dear lady, the power of money. And the loss of an eternal love. I know what my choice is. Great post my friend, maybe they might listen to you ❤️🙏

Thanks Mark! I don’t expect them to listen to me at all! Only those with ears will hear and those with eyes will see!

It may depend on the voice. I can always remember trying to tell my son some pearly wisdom and I’m sure it just went straight through. But a long time later a friend said exactly the same thing and his eyes lit up and that sudden recognition of understanding took him by the wings and set him free. I was gobsmacked. But soon realized there is indeed a time and a place…for us all 😀❤️🙏

It’s always humbling when we play the part of preparing the soil, but the seed wouldn’t take root if that hadn’t been done!

You rang lots of bells, Tamara. Here’s hoping each of us does his or her part to repair this world before we look to another one.

I agree Dr. Stein! The work starts with each of us. If we’re looking to reduce our consumerist behavior, I found it helpful to work on the inner drive, the inner need to have the latest and more stuff.

Agreed. I, however, am too poor to travel to Mars (or anywhere else for that matter!) Oh how I wish the world were a moral place!

Right?! We change the world by changing ourselves! We are each a drop in the ocean, but look at what a multitude of drops can become… an ocean!
