What is the meaning of Life… urm…

James on Perfect Manifesto has asked some great questions about life, and had given some thoughtful and amusing answers.

He said he will give us 3 answers to life questions we may have been asking:

  1. If time travel is possible, why have we never met a time traveler?
  2. Why do bad things happen to good people?
  3. What is the meaning of life

I was intrigued, so here’s my take on these questions!

If time travel is possible, why have we never met a time traveler?

If time travel were possible, isn’t it likely that the people would stay under the radar and not announce when/where they’re from?

After all, wouldn’t people think they had a mental problem and were off their meds? There are plenty of folks in the psych wards who claim to be all sorts of personages, from different time periods.

It may well be possible that any bonafide time traveler would be met with deep skepticism instead of being believed?

Could you have met one and laughed it off as crazy-talk? LOL!

Why do bad things happen to good people?

“He makes his sun rise on people whether they are good or evil. He lets rain fall on them whether they are just or unjust.”

Matthew 5:45

Good or bad things happen to us all. It isn’t dependent on merit or because of punishment. Period.

Years ago when I was in 2 strict evangelical churches (consecutively), because of mine and my daughter’s severe health issues the church leaders decided that God was punishing me for undisclosed sins, and instead of receiving the emotional and spiritual support, I was branded an irredeemable sinner, and given hours of corrective “talks”. My daughter had been told that her health issues resulted from my spiritual state and that created problems between us.

Much later, I found that because I didn’t know how to handle the severe stress I was going through, my immune system took a deep hit, and I developed chronic Shingles. My lifelong battle with severe migraines was actually due to my allergies, and my doctor had said that sometimes the only symptom a person has is migraines. Taking a 24 allergy tablet has resolved most of them, except if any of my other trigger create one.

As for my daughter, we found that not only did she have severe IBS, but she also has Celiac disease which created all the pain and misery she went through.

All of the judgementalism, the many long corrective sessions I went through, the shunning we experienced, was wrongly based. Only after we had gone through years of suffering in the churches did someone mention Matthew 5:45, and they somewhat backed off, but the damage had been done.

Coupled with all that garbage we went through there, the emotional and physical abuse from my mother and combined to bring me to the point where I felt I no longer deserved to walk on this earth or to breathe the air. I had formulated my exit strategy from this life, but thanks to what I attribute to heavenly intervention, I met an older man who taught me about the native American spiritual oath he was following, and I became re-acquainted with a loving, kind God who was working things out on my behalf.

If you are going through some dark times in your life, please remember the spiritual truism of Matthew 5:45.

Years ago I had 4 psychics approach me in the span of a couple of years, telling me they felt very strongly they had a message I needed to hear. To a person, they said almost the identical thing: which was “I had agreed to all my troubles before coming into this life.”

I had an opportunity to speak more with the 4th person, and she said yes, this is a truism for each of us. “Why?” I asked. “Why would I do something so stupid and very difficult?”

She said it was because it was the only way we could learn the deep soul lessons and to develop the life skills we needed. If life were easy we just wouldn’t willingly put ourselves through all that to learn those things. Wow!

So this isn’t about victim blaming, but if we have all agreed to our troubles before coming into this life, we also knew we have what it takes to go through it, even though it never feels like we do when we’re in the middle of it.

This may be news to you right now, but you have what it takes to get through what you’re dealing with, and this experience will develop far more strength than you ever knew you had!

Keep going!

What is the meaning of life?

The answer James gave “In Douglas Adams book The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, when the computer Deep Thought is asked the meaning of the life, the universe and everything, the artificial intelligence system eventually answers with “42.” is amusing, but also thought provoking too!

Apparently in the ASCII language, the most basic computer software, ’42′ is the designation for an asterisk, which can stand in for anything or everything!

The question “What is the meaning of life?” is too broad, and instead we need to ask “What meaning do I attach to my life?” and even that will not be definite, for it will be different for each of us and throughout our lives we go through different stages and phases, so that meaning is subject to change over time.

Since there is no definitive answer, it doesn’t mean there isn’t one, except that we get to choose for ourselves what we want it to be!

That’s very exciting isn’t it? Having all the choices before us simply requires us to open up to the possibilities the universe will bring to us!

Even difficult and painful events in our lives can be the catalyst we needed to move somewhere else, try something new or develop skills we had but weren’t fully using!

    1. We have learned to manage our symptoms and our health issues, unfortunately they are lifelong and so require we keep doing what we’re doing to be able to live comfortably. Thanks for your compassion and support!

      Be well yourself!

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, it’s interesting to see it on an individual and personal level, isn’t it! That makes it so much more accessible to each of us, and helps to stop the outward search for inner meaning!

  1. Sounds intriguing! I have it on my Amazon! Thank you! Yes, I agree, life’s meaning is what makes sense to each of us. If we believe it is a hard and unyielding world, everything we see will support that. If we believe that we are loved and supported by God and the universe, we will see signs of that too.

  2. After going through so much I found one constant…all of our experiences do indeed teach us those three amigo’s of empathy, compassion and love in going through them. And finally at that moment I understood my fear, I suddenly saw right back through my life’s trail and understood each and every step is polishing that love within us, even…and even more profoundly, those hard parts that we think we can never go through. And after all is said and done, that understanding of what that conditional love from our fears is…we let it go, like anything else we understand, we no longer think about it…and there hiding beneath it all is the unconditional love we have ever looked for, that love and happiness we always have wanted but never seemed to find. It was always sitting inside us, a part of us, just waiting for us to go through this very thing of fear so that we could finally understand. Great post dear lady, enjoy your journey, there is a great love inside just waiting to be opened…in understanding and opening ourselves 😀❤️🙏

    1. Yes, I love what you wrote here Mark! We strive for so many outward things while we are hurting and raw, and when we heal and learn to like and then to love ourselves we find what we have been seeking, the little flame inside that we didn’t know was there, we discover it! This brings us peace, because we are no longer restlessly searching. Nice!

  3. Wow! That was a lot, but good. We were always taught that the meaning of life is to know, love, and serve God. This is what I believe. As for other things being worked out by God for your best, I believe that too. Look at the story of Joseph. He was sold into slavery by jealous brothers and spent time in jail. However, God used him to interpret the dream of a King/Pharaoh/guy in charge (don’t quite remember the details!) And he saved the people by controlling how much grain people could have so that the didn’t starve in the seven years of famine that came after the seven years of plenty. Also, he saved his family! I would not wish what either you or I have gone through (and I’m so sorry you had to endure that!) on anyone, but think how He worked it for our good. Now you and I are both encouraging others. I’m happily working at a shelter I really did not want to stay at, and things are looking up! God bless you!

    1. Wow! Thanks Rita! Yes, it’s amazing isn’t it how we have been given opportunités to help others and we’re doing our best to honor what we have been given. I feel grateful to be able to do this work, it’s really the best! You keep rocking it out!

  4. Interesting questions to consider. I love your response about time travelers. One would be foolish to reveal oneself. With regards to the second question, I believe that it’s easier for us to blame others for their misfortunes because it removes our possible culpability and responsibility for dealing with the suffering around us. Based on what I’ve learned from the sages of old, the meaning of life becomes clear with enlightenment, a consciousness that is not limited by our six senses of our physical body.

    1. Right? It is very interesting and everyone is correct in their views, as we can find evidence or support for different sides.

  5. Thank you, Tamara. With respect to the meaning of life, I’ve pretty much settled on the question you offered. Put in other words, it would be “What is the meaning of my life.” If you want to read an uplifting story that relates to that, read the charming but thoughtful little book, “It Was on Fire When I Lay Down Upon It,” by Robert Fulgham.
