“People generally see what they look for, and hear what they listen for.” – Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird
Try as we might to change someone’s mind, unless they’re open to hearing or seeing something new our chances of successfully having them listen is small!
Is it worth any efforts on our part to try?
If we’re respectful, not trying to convince them at all costs, it is possible, for people will rarely listen when they feel backed into a corner or if they’re on their defensive!
When we believe passionately about something, it can be difficult to manage our own emotions to stay calm and respectful, there is the real danger of becoming too pushy.
Our own job is to keep ourselves calm before trying to convince another, or the conversation can quickly turn into an argument.
If it becomes a little heated, remember to take a step back! We need to ask ourselves what we’re really trying to do, are we trying to teach another point of view or are we trying to prove we’re right and they’re wrong?
It serves no purpose to try to push through a point without taking into account that many people need time to mull things over in their head before they make a decision, so you may well convince someone, but could lose the whole issue by pushing too hard!
If we hope to convince someone else, we also need to be open to hearing their side, so both sides can learn more and become better able to find the best solutions! It’s always possible that we ourselves have been misinformed, so keeping open and listening is important.
