Last week, the Missouri Botanical Garden announced that the Corpse Flower had bloomed. I didn’t see the announcement in the evening but rushed over the next day to view this blossom that lasted for only 24 hours.
As you can see, the commanding spire was already collapsing, and the dreadful smell wasn’t as powerful as when it first opened. The bad smelling flower gets its name because when it opens it smells like a rotting corpse. You can compare its size to the window panes behind, it is a massive blossom to behold.
I had missed previous openings, both at this Botanical Garden and the one in Tucson, AZ, so this was a first for me.

Here’s a time-lapse of “Millie”, taken by the staff at the Missouri Botanical Garden:
Another first I did? I dipped a toe into online dating, something I had been dreading and avoiding for a long time. Facebook has a new dating thing to connect local singles together. I matched with a man and we started chatting online.
After a few days he asked me if I wanted to go for a walk with him, he was heading to a local walking trail. I was already in my car ready to go for a walk and I was debating between that very trail and another one, so I said I’d meet him there. Quite serendipitous wasn’t that!
We walked the trail, stopped in at a cafe on the way, had a light snack and beverage, then walked back to our cars. The conversation was quite intense, he was asking questions about my spiritual beliefs, and since I’ve had some very strange experiences, he kept asking more and more questions. Maybe too intense for a first date! I felt quite drained after that encounter, it seemed to take so much out of me.
I was thinking that I had scared him off, and figured that maybe I wouldn’t think about dating, as my experiences can be quite overwhelming for many to hear. We did have a shorter 2nd date, he offered to buy me a cold treat, with the heat wave going on, so we went to a mall where we could walk around in the AC while sipping our smoothies.
I haven’t heard anything from him since, and yes, I did lob a friendly message a couple of days ago to see how he was doing, but perhaps he’s looking for someone who is spiritually minded, but who hasn’t had the experiences I have. It can be a tad overwhelming.
So while a friendship might not continue to grow, I met a nice person, I’m very happy that my first foray into dating was so positive.
Will I continue to date online? Perhaps, I’m not pushing things though.
I hope you have had some interesting experiences this week!

Thanks for sharing about your new dating experience, Tamara! I’ve heard some horror stories, but this doesn’t sound too bad.

Right?! It’s the new dating thingy through Facebook. It connects you with people in your locale. No last names, no contact info. Just communicate through the private message board.

Yep. I have a couple friends who have “found love” through FB dating (or whatever it’s called). I hope you do, too, if you want to 😉

I don’t know if I will find love like your friends did, but male companionship would be nice at times!

The flower is wild! I can tell how large it is from the photo, I’ve never seen one before.
I think it’s great you are trying something new, online dating. We never know until we give it a shot. Glad your first experience with it was positive. 🙂

Thanks so much! Yes the flower is awesome to behold! Quite large!

So glad you finally got to see one, even if it was past its prime. And don’t get discouraged if it didn’t work out with this guy. There are plenty of people out there who are open to hearing about unique experiences. Hope you have a great week, Tamara. 🌻

Thanks Ritish! I’ve spoken with a couple of guys my age and it seems like my experiences are a little too much for those who haven’t experienced much out of the norm. I’ll keep trying! Hope your summer is going well!

That is the coolest funkiest flower. I would love to experience that. Learned that the one in the botanical garden near us bloomed last year! Missed it!

You’d have to follow their Facebook page to get notifications! I missed out on the one in Tucson blooming, and previous blooms here too. It is truly quite spectacular to see, it is very large! I hope you get to see one!

And the smell?

The smell was waning. Apparently it’s quite strong when it first blooms. Smelled like trash going bad.

Some people say it smells like a body rotting, but I never smelled one, so I couldn’t say!

Yikes! I suppose that’s why it’s also called a corpse flower.

Yep, that’s what I heard! Thankfully it didn’t smell too awful!

Tamara, your week sounds eventful and uniquely special. I am glad you had a nice time and to see (and smell) a corpse flower would be quite something! 🌼

Thank you! Your week of photos looks like a fun week too! It was on my list of things I really wanted to do, so getting to finally see on in person was wonderful. They’re quite large!

I’ve only watched Corpse Flower blossom live on our local TV station some years ago. The connection between rebirth and death becomes a reality with its scent of a rotting corpse.
In the past, I was too skeptical about online dating to ever give it a try. Good for you!

I like your thought about the connection between birth and death! Very interesting thought! Yes, I was extremely skeptical, but decided to give it a try since he was local and our messaging was going well!

I’ve heard of this plant because of The Simpsons but never seen it in real life. Looks like you’ve had quite a few new experiences recently. Even though the person you met may not want to continue to talk, it’s still cool that you got out of your comfort zone and met someone new.

The Simpson’s! Love it! Yes, it struck me how I did 2 new things in one week! I’m happy I did both. Getting out of our comfort zones now and then is good for the soul!

The opening of a smelly flower paired with online dating – is there a hidden parallel here? Love your passion, honesty, and willingness. As you’ve often said, “What do you have to lose?”
You are courageous!

Lol, now that you mention it…! I hadn’t considered a parallel! I hadn’t dipped my toe into some online dating sites, the men around my age looked like they had just been released from prison or were addicts. Facebook dating seemed to have normal looking guys!

Interesting flower! I would not be excited to smell that!!! So brave of you to try online dating! I’ve thought about it, but haven’t had the nerve. Maybe someday.

I have to admit I didn’t smell the scent when I first approached, so I leaned in closer to get a sniff! It’s apparently quite pungent when the flower first opens! I could pass on that! Since it was Facebook dating with men in my area, I figured it seemed closer to being real than other sites. I had to create a special profile for that, it didn’t automatically refer to my real Facebook profile, so there is a layer of safety. I’m not desperately looking, like I’ve seen some people do, so if no one connects, then I’m not worried, I just continue with my own life!

Very interesting plant, as was the date. First time putting your toe in the water can be a shock after many years of being single and not going there…but then again, so can that plant and its smell. It can take some time, a little more than the plants 24hrs anyway. Enjoy what blossoms within you kind lady, may it be just as powerful, but in the opposite way 🤗🤣❤️🙏

Thanks Mark, yes, I find your analogy quite interesting! It was a good week, and I’m proud to have made the effort to have both experiences. Hope your week is awesome!

I was amazed at the size of the blossom, it was much larger than I anticipated! Thank you Dr. Stein! I’m happy I tried dating again, it’s been quite a while!
