Humans aren’t really well known for being pro-active, we usually wait until the danger that was only a possibility is actually upon us.
The business community has been honed over the decades to follow the same path.
Being pro-active when a possible threat has become imminent is seen as being wise, and good business practice to do something about it before it wipes the business out.
Being pro-active too soon, i.e. when it isn’t directly going to happen, is seen as being fearful of what the future holds.
Fearfulness is seen as a weakness, to be avoided at all costs.
Big business owners all around the world aren’t necessarily going to jump in to retool their factories, change the type of packaging, or even stop pushing people to buy lots and lots of useless stuff that will clog up our landfills and oceans, telling people they’re successful in life because they own all the latest “mast-have” items.
They’d rather keep doing exactly what they’re doing right now, because it’s extremely, extremely profitable to do what they’re doing. Their shareholders want them to keep doing what they’re doing, because business as usual is making them rich too.
Millions of customers around the world love the products they’re buying and love feeling like they’re on top of the world when they buy them, so they won’t be too happy to have anything change.
Only when things have reached a point where it is so obvious that things need to change, will they be willing to make vast changes to how they make, sell and buy things.
It will take a massive shift in how all of us see the importance of buying lots of stuff and be willing to live with less, not have the latest iteration of every electronic, be willing to let things get old and even ragged, and find our self-worth in other things that may not be so easily measured.
We may need to not heat buildings so we can wear a t-shirt indoors in the cold weather and not chill the place in the hot times until we need to wear a sweater.
The question is, will it be in time to turn things around? At this point of where humanity is, will people even be willing to do what they need to do, or will they prefer to go down with the proverbial ship?

AC tip: Start setting the AC a little warmer than very cold.
We really don’t need it to be freezing cold in order to feel comfortable during regular summer temperatures or heat waves!
If every AC unit were to switch from blasting freezing cold temperatures to something less cold, we can use less power from the grid or less gasoline and freon in our cars, and in a small, barely noticeable way help our environment.
What other ways can we make incremental changes that don’t impact our comfort terribly but collectively make a difference?
(I’m talking about making small changes, because those feel much more doable and sustainable to our lives than trying massive changes. Maybe we will need to do more than that, but let’s start somewhere!)

Yeah, that’s an unfortunate characteristic of humans, whereby we tend to take action towards change only when things go really bad and it becomes really apparent.

Right on! Plus, if there are political agendas at play, which there are in this problem area, that issue is even more pronounced, for they will require the climate change issues to directly affect their own lives in a dire way.

I love your analysis of why we are so slow to change course. I will proudly tell you that I don’t have AC. Historically it hasn’t been needed in Seattle because there are only a handful of really warm days/nights. There are more these days but I’ve opted not to get AC because it seems like feeding the cycle – the climate gets warmer because of our behavior so we double-down on our behavior to get AC and spend more energy? 🙂

Wow! You’re indeed fortunate not to need AC, and Kuddos to you for not getting it! I wouldn’t survive without it in St. Louis, but I still try to use it minimally, just enough to not get heat stroke! Using our resources more mindfully is something we’re all going to need to learn, and we’re going to need some very clever ad campaigns to help sway people to a different way of living, just like ad campaigns swayed people to start buying more and more stuff!

I’ve made it a habit to put a jumper on rather than a heater. Even to go for a walk to not only warm up but make it a purpose to enjoy outside and nature, be in the sun more and interact with others…rather than isolating so much. I do realize we are having those two sides to everything so that winter tends to be a more hibernating experience and then go into that more open summer, to appreciate them both by experiencing both sides. Plus we do cheat like on here ‘connecting’ instead of outside…but there is nothing like walking on a beach and feeling that openness but connecting all at once 😀❤️🙏

I love how you’ve put this Mark! Yes, we need to rethink how we approach everything, to bring more joy and connection into our lives instead of stuff! Love this!

Tamara, thanks for tackling this critical issue regarding humanity’s failure to take decisive action in doing what needs to be done in the face of our global climate and ecological crises. As you point out so well, it’s not easy to change our way of doing business and our lifestyles when there’s still a lot of money to be made. With promises of technological solutions, those in power have lulled us into believing that there’s still time to turn things around. Meanwhile, human societies impacted by natural disasters and their aftermath are already in the process of collapse. Here in the USA, it’s evident with the growing divide between extremist left and right groups, coupled with a call for civil war, and the growing homeless populations in our cities. As we turn down our ACs, we must also turn down the hateful speech and threats of violence towards those we disagree with.

Yes, yes, yesssss! I love how you put this Rosaliene! We have pushed ourselves to the brink and are at each other’s throats instead of demanding that the legislators and big business change their ways. What if… what if *gasp* this were their game-plan, to get us angry at one another and become blind to what they’re doing and not doing?! (While they continue to laugh all the way to the bank??)
Yes, we have so much to repair and change don’t we?

We do, indeed, Tamara. Some days, the toxicity wears me down.

I totally understand! I feel that way too sometimes, then I have to remind myself that I have no power over them, only myself, and if I keep putting out support and positive help for people, maybe I can influence one or two people for the better!

I’ve started using my cloth bags full-time. I try not to take plastic bags, but if I happen to get something that is recyclable, I take it to Festival Foods, who has the bags into benches program to make recyclable bags, bubble wrap, etc. Into park benches.

Me too, I use my cloth shopping bags. I am dismayed with the overpackaging of products and how inescapable plastic is. This will be up to the manufacturers to make those changes. Good for you for doing something positive!
