Okay, full disclosure, I had to do the cleanse as part of my pre-colonoscopy test, but I now understand why people are raving about doing cleanses.
I used to discount it, saying to myself that when I get sick and get the runs, that it’s basically the same thing, and I never felt better after THAT.
However, doing a cleanse when we’re healthy as opposed to when we’re doing an involuntary one when sick really are 2 different things.
After my procedure, it took my stomach one day to become accustomed to food again, having started slowly with easy to digest things and working my way back to normal healthy food.
I was quite surprised to see how I felt differently after the cleanse; I really wasn’t expecting to see any changes.
I had heard people raving how they felt clearer-headed, less fatigued, and had more stamina. I thought those were just psychosomatic effects; they told themselves they would feel better, and mind-over-matter, they did.
Then I was surprised. I was feeling clear-headed in the mornings after, I wasn’t completely tired at the end of a workday, and the other day when I went for a walk in the park, I was almost back up to my old mileage, as my muscles weren’t cramping after a couple of miles. I repeated the mileage a couple of days later.
This was very interesting to me to experience these improvements, as I wasn’t expecting them, much less even hoping for them. They simply weren’t on my radar at all.
Now I understand why people do cleanses, and even why the Bible suggests fasting. I’m not familiar with other Holy books, but I have seen the Bible gives many different types of advice about how to live a healthier life, physically, mentally and spiritually. (Just to clarify which part I’m referring to, I know there are many whole Bible followers, but Jesus did say He was the New Covenant, the Old was done away.)
Apparently it isn’t only about giving our digestive systems a break, though that may help; it is supposed to be more about removing lots of old toxins that have built up in our systems and which create flora imbalances, as well as are the building blocks for many illnesses.
A couple of years ago my digestive system went into the crapper after going downhill for a few years. Age and menopause related, I was told to expect it.
Since I didn’t want to accept it and just go on the medications so many are on, I first started taking digestive enzymes with each meal. That helped with the severe pain and discomfort every time I ate something, but it wasn’t curing it, so I started taking probiotics in capsule form and in yogurt drinks.
Slowly over time I noticed improvements with my digestion. I was no longer experiencing the severe attacks and could even eat a few easy to digest foods without much trouble. Harder to digest foods still required the enzymes.
The round, apple-shaped belly I had developed from menopause was slowly getting smaller too, which made me happy. My stamina had been affected not only by menopause but from the after-effects of COVID. I had been set to accept my new body shape and my lesser physical powers. Menopause had wreaked havoc with my health, the hormones changed my body shape, greatly lowered my stamina and metabolism, and also turned my once wavy hair into full-on tight curls.
Imagine my surprise to find a positive change from a cleanse, when I had worked hard to accept myself with all the changes aging was bringing.
Note: the Mayo Clinic doesn’t support doing colon cleansing, as there are many different types of cleanses, and there have even been deaths associated with coffee enemas. You’d have to talk with your doctor about cleanses and get their recommendation.
Mine was prescribed by the doctor, I was given medication for it, and told specifically how to do it, which included drinking plenty of Gatorade to not get dehydrated or have my electrolytes drop low.
I will be doing my own research to see if there is something I can do on my own that isn’t drastic. I’m going to look into liquid fasting vs. a cleanse to see which is safer.
I don’t want to do anything unsafe so I’ll look into this more.
As a final note, here’s what the Mayo Clinic recommends:
If you choose to try colon cleansing, take these precautions:
- Check with your conventional medical provider first, especially if you take any medications or have any health problems, such as kidney or heart disease.
- Make sure your colon-cleansing practitioner is reputable and uses disposable equipment that hasn’t been previously used.
- Get a list of specific herbal ingredients and amounts in any colon-cleansing products you use — some ingredients can cause health problems.
Have you done a cleanse? Has your experience been positive, and if yes, in what way? Were you medically supervised or not?

Thanks for sharing this, Tamara! I used to do a sugar detox once a year, and I had similar effects (i.e., clearer mind, lighter feeling, etc.).
Also, you should consider writing for my other community blog, Navigating the Change. Please let me know if you’re interested.

Thanks for the prompt! I’m already on your site, and I opened it in a new tab to remind myself to do this. Right now, I’m trying to focus on my 3rd book, but I might if I need a break from it! I appreciate you reaching out!

My wife did a cleanse when preparing for a colonoscopy. I don’t know how she felt about it but I remember her being envious of the regular diet the kids and myself was on!
She said with my typical diet I’d struggle to do one – I couldn’t disagree!

I have no idea if one’s diet has anything to do with the method employed for the pre- test cleansing they require. It a harsh and drastic one for everyone, and the no food, clear liquid part is difficult too. I suppose the only way to know is to go through it and compare notes with your wife?
Certainly the typical American way of eating isn’t conducive to good colon health. Even reducing the quantity and frequency of eating meat could be of great help. I could feel my system slowing down each time I ate meat in the few days afterwards, so that has helped inform my own decision to eat less of it and less often.
I’m going to explore a couple gentle cleanses, that are no way as drastic as what the hospital required, but will be of benefit to me.
I endorse this concept for others to explore for themselves.

The preparation for that test was brutal. Good for you that something positive came out of it!

Yes, thankfully I received good results from the test and I learned something in the process. I will however go for gentle cleanses in the future! LOL!

Always something to learn! 😆 Gentle is smart. 😌

Really interesting experience. I do a cleanse once a month with the help of my sister who is a trained nutritionist and it actually helps me feel so much better. I always feel like I have so much more strength after.

That’s interesting that you do it as often as you do! Are you willing to share your protocol? I’m in learning mode!

Sure! I don’t do major cleanses more than once a year because it’s not good for you to cleanse too often. But I do minor cleanses. The evening before I take an herbal cleansing pill. It’s called “triphala” and it’s all natural so no harm or weird side effects. The day after I do a juice fast where I drink juices that specifically help cleanse your entire digestive system. And the day after you just feel so amazing. Remember not to drink fruit juices as they are high in sugar and can be damaging when you drink them on an empty stomach. If you’re interested I can share all the juices I drink throughout the day.

So you want to start your day by drinking 1 date, 1 apricot and 5 black raisins soaked overnight in one glass of water. Drink the water and eat the dry fruits. One hour later, drink one glass of cucumber, celery, pear and ginger juice. One hour later drink a glass of non-dairy milk one cardamom, one piece of cinnamon and a pinch of ginger powder. In the afternoon, drink one glass of celery, parsley, beetroot and carrot juice. Throughout the day, drink mung bean water. Make this by boiling one handful of mung beans with about 10 glasses of water. strain out the boiled beans and keep the water. If you’re hungry at night eat some fruit and if not start the next day with a very light breakfast. Let me know if you have any questions!

Awesome! No problem at all, a lot of people prefer to take it once a week to detox but start with once a month.

Very interesting–the comments too. Stuff for me to look forward to, I guess. :o} That’s great that you felt so much more energy and less fatigue after your cleanse. Every once in a while something I eat hits my stomach hard. I imagine that will only get worse.

Yes, unfortunately an aging digestive system is something we all end up dealing with, and finding solutions is important otherwise we get stuck with misery or medications with side effects.
I’m not against taking medications if they’re necessary, but I always explore other avenues to see if there’s something that could work for me.
At 61 I’m new to the game of cleansing, but I have seen for myself that there’s definitely something to it!

Yes, thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. I, too, steer clear of medications when possible. So much can be said for a healthy diet to stave off health problems.

True. I have a compromised immune system due to an old chronic illness, so I take extra supplements to boost my system whereby I don’t fall sick. I’m grateful for these options!

Yes, wonderful that other options exist!

How interesting, Tamara. I love your observation that a healthy cleanse is different than an involuntary cleanse. That makes sense! Hope your colonoscopy went well!

Yes, there’s quite a difference, as I found out… and yes, the colonoscopy went well. Nice and healthy!

I found the cleansing of the intestinal tract in preparation for my colonoscopy exam very brutal. I dread having to undergo that again. My vision cleared of all the tiny dots I was accustomed to seeing during my daily Amsler Grid Test.
I’ve also experienced similar menopausal changes, down to having tight curls 🙂 Since having Covid, during which my scalp itched for some unknown reason, my hair has now reversed back to long wavy hair. I miss my curls!
I feel much more energetic and lighter with my vegetarian protein diet of beans, lentils, and nuts: all great natural colon cleansers. Quinoa also works wonders.

Yes those pre colonoscopy cleanses are harsh and brutal. I wouldn’t dou that again unless I had to, I’m much more interested in gentle ones using herbs to help the liver.
Your diet is really the ideal diet for the rest of us to follow. Our typical American diet is pretty unhealthy, so cleansing becomes a better idea.
I got curls from menopause and I’m enjoying them! I’m sorry yours went away! 😔 I guess we have so much to be thankful for no matter how our hair is!

I’m glad to hear you felt so great after your cleanse! There are so many benefits to going for an extended period without feeding. I don’t fast or do cleanses myself because I’m on such a strict dietary and supplement regimen, which includes immediately upon waking and just before bed. But, I’ve done a lot of research into it.
Generally, extended fasting is very beneficial for males but less so for females (likely because ancestral men hunted, whereas women gathered and nibbled throughout the day). When is healthy for women is intermittent fasting, which is where you have a small “feeding window” of 16-18 hours. For example, eat dinner at 6 PM and wait 8-10 AM to break the fast. Many female family members in their 60-70s do this and feel great! This gives the body time to detox and repair. Going with out food for more than 24 hours regularly can throw a woman’s hormones out of whack, so we need to be a bit more careful.

Those are excellent points you bring up! I had forgotten about intermittent fasting, it was already something that I have been doing for a few years it has become an unconscious habit. I try to eat my bigger meal at lunch and keep an easier to digest meal for evening times as my digestive system seems to prefer that.
Instead of a total cleanse with laxatives and clear liquids, I’m thinking about a more gentle herbal liver cleanse (burdock root, milk thistle, dandelion root and yellow dock)coupled with drinking green juices and some fruit juices.
My stepson is a doctor of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and had recommended in the past that I do a little cleanse at the 2 changes of season, from got to cold and vice-versa. I see the wisdom of that now!

My best friend’s grandmother back in China is an herbalist, so I’ve received the same recommendation. I think there’s a lot of truth to it!
I think there’s value to those gentle cleanses, as long as you know what you’re doing. I haven’t done them myself, but would absolutely consider it once my body is back to a 100% baseline.

I agree with you re getting your system back to normal! Even a gentle cleanse can be stressful on an unhealthy body. That’s why I didn’t do them for years, but I think I could do a gentle cleanse at the change between hot and cold.

Lol, I only did it because I had to! As with all things that brings us both discomfort and a positive, we will delay experiencing it unless we have to. I’m not sure I’d want to voluntarily go through that discomfort again, but I lime the positive side enough to look for an easier way to accomplish it! 😉😜
