My department chose 1 family to adopt this year through 100Neediest Families, a program through United Way, but we were saddened that we turned down a second family. We chose to help the family who had become homeless, but the needs of the 2nd family we weren’t able to adopt still tug at my heartstrings.

Story: Ms. M is a caring, dedicated mother of 9 kids with one of her sons no longer living in her home. Sadly, one of her daughters lost her life in a car accident a few years ago. Their perseverance has shown through amid their tragedy. This has caused her family to treasure every moment of their lives together. Ms. M now has the added challenge of learning to navigate the diagnosis of a muscular disease. Additionally, financial struggles are burdensome as prices increase on things like groceries. Unfortunately, several incidents this year have negatively impacted their income as well. One of her kids was struck in a hit and run accident. After physical therapy, her son is much improved, but the medical bills piled up. To add to the stress, some of the rooms of her home got flooded after their pipes burst. She had to use some of the money that she would normally use to pay bills to fix her home. Despite the challenges, Ms. M is hopeful for her family’s future and looks forward to their annual cookie exchange during the holidays. Some holiday assistance would bring added joy into their home and help them through this difficult time.
